Iraq War is Over, Finally !

As I am sure many of you have heard, the last combat troops have been removed from Iraq as of the 31st of August, 2010, just as promised by President Obama. This does not end our involvement in Iraq, we are simply  transforming from an occupation force to allied presence, similar to out bases in Germany and South Korea. We will have troops in Iraq for decades to come. Occupation forces are never allowed to mix with the locals except in a professional capacity. Allied forces, generally are allowed to go into town on their days off and are in fact encouraged to mix socially with locals and contribute to the local economy. The wonderful thing about this, is our soldiers tend to carry bits and pieces of our culture to these other countries and the surrounding communities tend to become at least a little Americanized. Our soldiers marry locals and bring them home, where they in return bring bits of their culture to us and increase our beautiful diversity here in the United States. Anyone who has visited German bakery or a Korean restaurant in Killeen Texas, knows what I am talking about. I am looking forward to Persian food and hookah bars in the future.

Editorial: Freedom of Religion

The one thing this “Ground Zero Mosque” crap has shown us, is freedom of religion in the United States is pretty much skin deep. I have said for many years Atheists should be careful about what they say and how they approach Christians. The fact is Christians out number all other religions and Atheists combined by something like 10 to 1. If the Christians in this country got it in their heads to purge the heathens, we’d all be done for.

Michael Enright, I believe is just the first of many in the coming years to take out his anger and fear on innocent people of other religions. It remains to be seen if he will be punished and how harshly for his crime. The question the prosecutor has to ask himself, is how to keep sympathetic Christians off the jury, is that even possible with a population made up primarily of Christians ? If you think the religion of the jury should not matter, let me ask you this question, should his jury be made up entirely of Muslims ? I suspect I know your answer.

Are blogs protected by the 1st Amendment ?

Freedom speech is definitely protected under the constitution, but would a blog receive freedom of the press protections as well ? This seems to be ambiguous at this time.

http://www.legalzoom.com/us-law/freedom-speech/are-blogs-protected-under

I would think truthfully law enforcement would take a very dim view of someone trying to claim freedom of the press protections using a blog. It is possible a large site could get away with it, say the DailyKos, which has 30,000 readers. A small blog like this place with virtually no readers, I doubt a judge would accept such a thing as a true blue news reporting outfit. If I were a small print newspaper, say for a small town of a few hundred and the paper was published more as a hobby than a for profit business, surely a judge would accept this as legitimate news organization, even if the paper never sold more that 100 papers per week.

So if a high traffic blog and a low circulation print news paper both count as a news organization, the question becomes, how high of traffic does the blog have to be to qualify as a news site ?

Zeus Trojan

This Trojan so far has stolen an estimated $1 million, it is possible this is an exaggeration and it is also possible the number is far higher. It was really only a matter of time before malicious software advanced to the point where it could do this sort of thing. So fire up your anti-virus software and start paying close attention to your bank account.

Editorial: Proposition 8

Cross Posted from blog.carnifex.org

Thankfully California’s Amendment to their constitution which banned same sex marriage has been overturned. It was overturned for the reason I suspected it would be, it fails equal protection. This thing will be dragged out for another couple of years, but for now, the good guys are winning. My opinion on this subject is fairly simple. Either marriage is a right or it is a privilege  bestowed by the government.

If marriage is a privilege bestowed by the government then we need to change some laws in this country. First, I think we need to bar violent felons from marrying, especially those convicted of rape, child abuse, child neglect and spouse abuse. While we are at it, lets ban prison marriages as well. Next lets institute a three strikes you out ban, lets face it, if you have been involved in three failed marriages, it is your fault and your wasting everyones time so you don’t get to do it again. Next lets set a hard age limit on marriage to 18, no more “Parental Consent” bullshit and while we are picking on the deep south, I think first cousins is not enough genetic variance, lets make it 2nd or even 3rd cousins. I would also like to institute a minimum seven day waiting period between getting a marriage license and actually getting married, I know this would destroy a whole industry in Las Vegas, but seriously if you love each other, you can wait a week. Finally, since this government is the sole arbitrator of legal marriage, we need to take the ability to marry couple away from religion. Oh they can still do their little ceremony to get the blessing of whatever deity they pray to, but the couple will not be legally married until they appear before the appropriate government bureaucrat and sign the appropriate paper work in triplicate. This way we can ensure no one is breaking any of the new rules.

On the other hand, If marriage is a right, then the government has no right to interfere with marriage as an institution other than for public safety reasons. This is the position I take. I believe anyone two consenting adults with enough genetic variance, have the right to marry. It really is that simple, that easy. To all of you suffering from advanced homophobia out there, finding “Teh gay icky” is not a public safety issue.

Recording Policmen is illegal ??

Cross Posted from blog.carnifex.org

Apparently, in some states it is illegal to record the police, even if they are in a public area where it is legal to record virtually anyone else. It occurs to me, if you live in one of these states, you should declare yourself a journalist. Setting up a credible amateur news site and posting even a minimal amount of news and editorial content will provide you with freedom of the press protection. Then if you get the opportunity to shoot video of a cop doing bad things, it makes it far more difficult for them to harass you. Well, they can still harass you, but they will not be able to charge you with stupid things like breaking a wiretapping law.

In the begining

This is an amateur news site made primarily to provide me with 1st Amendment freedom of the press protections.
